Are you using a private agency? Which one?
Yes, we are using LDS Family Services. This is a non-profit private agency run by our church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to adoption services, they offer free counseling to unmarried expectant parents (regardless of religion or background), support groups, and other services. Are you willing to adopt an older child?
LDS Family Services only places infants.
Have you considered an international adoption?
Not right now. LDS Family Services only does domestic adoptions anyway. We can adopt a child anywhere within the United States.
How long will it take for you to get a baby?
There is no timeline since it's the birth mother who picks us. We've heard of a couple waiting only a month while others wait more than 7 years. (Statistically, the average wait time with LDS Family Services is about two years.) After talking to several birth moms, we learned that they "just knew" when they found the right family for their baby. As mentioned in a previous post, we trust that the baby that is meant to be in our family will end up in our family.
Are you considering an open adoption?
Absolutely! We are definitely open to phone calls, texts, letters/emails, and even visits. We want to do what is best for the child, birth mother, and our family so the level of openness may vary depending upon what everyone is most comfortable with. We've heard over and over again the benefits of an open adoption for everyone involved.
So now do you just sit and wait for someone to contact you?
Yes and no. We are waiting for someone to contact us but in the meantime we are trying to stay proactive in spreading the word that we are hoping to adopt a baby! I set up an Adoption Facebook page, started writing about our experiences in this blog, and passed out these cute adoption pass-along cards! The back of the cards have a QR code that links to our adoption profile on itsaboutlove.org. We've been hearing more and more stories of adoption connections happening because of word of mouth. Who knows, maybe a card will be passed along 3 or 4 times to end up in the right hands. If you would like some cards or more cards, let us know and we'll be happy to send them your way!
